Are you an outstanding student who enjoys helping other students succeed in their courses?

TCL's Learning Resources Center is seeking peer tutors in multiple subject areas, including English and math. If you would like to help your fellow classmates build their academic skills, check out the position requirements on this page. Then submit your application and faculty recommendation (see below) to the Learning Resources Center. Call 843-525-8304 for more information.

 

Peer Tutor Job Description

The goal of peer tutors is to help students develop learning and study skills in order to become more independent learners. Peer tutors report directly to the Director for Learning Resources. Tutors meet with students either individually or in small groups to assist them in development of basic math, science, reading, and writing skills. Tutors assist with specific coursework as needed.

 

Qualifications and duties:

  • Peer Tutors must be enrolled in at least one class at TCL for the semester during which they wish to tutor.
  • Peer Tutors must have a minimum overall 3.0 GPA.
  • Peer Tutors must have demonstrated competency in the chosen subject by earning an “A” in the course.
  • Peer Tutors must obtain a written recommendation from an instructor in the subject area in which they wish to tutor.
  • Peer Tutors must possess strong organizational and study skills, interpersonal and communication skills, and an interest in helping students become better learners.
  • Peer Tutors must exhibit a basic comfort level with computers and multimedia equipment, and must complete additional training as required.
  • Peer Tutors must complete mandatory training as assigned. Peer Tutors will become familiar with Tutoring Center and LRC resources, as well as any other resources recommended by the Director for Learning Resources.
  • In individual sessions, peer tutors will assist students with math, science, reading, and writing skills as assigned. They will help students identify areas for improvement in these subjects as well as in their overall academic skills.
  • Peer Tutors may be asked to assist with student workshops in their subject area. Workshops will be recorded and may be posted to the TCL website for future viewing.
  • Other duties as assigned.
